Intel and BlueData have today announced their collaboration, alongside an additional equity investment from Intel Capital, with aims to simplify big data infrastructure.

Whilst BlueData will develop and optimise its big data infrastructure software for Intel architecture, Intel will focus its engineering and marketing resources on the joint engineering roadmap and joint customer acquisition.

Kumar Sreekanti, co-founder and CEO of BlueData, said: “This strategic collaboration with Intel will help advance BlueData’s mission of making it easy to deploy big data infrastructure. Our software platform simplifies the complexity, reduces the cost and delivers faster time to value for big data initiatives.”

The deal builds upon Intel’s existing recent investments in big data market, including last years collaboration with Cloudera for Apache Hadoop, as well as February’s partnership with Databricks Apache Spark.

With Intel’s investment made in order to simplify the infrastructure complexity that can slow down Big Data deployments, BlueData works with all of the major Apache Hadoop distributions as well as Apache Spark. Additionally, it integrates with the leading analytical applications, allowing choice when using big data software.

Joining BlueData’s board of directors is Doug Fisher, senior vice president of Intel and general manager of its Software and Services Group, who stated: “BlueData’s software platform complements Intel’s initiatives in Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark, as well as our technology advancements in data center virtualization and container technology on Intel architecture.”

BlueData additionally announced a further $20 million in funding. Led by Intel Capital, the company’s third investment in BlueData since 2012, the funding also includes further backing from existing investors Amplify Partners, Atlantic Bridge, and Ignition Partners as well as a new unnamed strategic investor.

“Intel architecture provides a high-performance, secure, robust foundation for big data analytics,” said Brian Krzanich, Intel CEO. “BlueData’s innovative software delivers the simplicity, agility and efficiency of big data-as-a-service in an on-premises model. Together, we are focused on bringing big data into the mainstream and unlocking the value for our enterprise customers.”
