South Korea to build IoT smart city model in Goyang

South Korean phone network LG Uplus has announced its plans to set up a smart city project in Goyang, located just north of Seoul, to trial IoT technologies which will benefit the lives of its citizens.
The new programme comes following the decision of the nation’s Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning to establish an IoT-based smart city model in Gyeonggi Province, which will eventually be extended to other cities around the country.
‘We will develop IoT-based converged services and work to solve pending issues in urban areas by tapping into our open smart city platform technologies,’ explained LG Uplus IoT director Ahn Sung-joon.
LG Uplus, South Korea’s third-largest telecom company, will publicly share the data collected from the project and collaborate with other local governments and businesses to encourage similar initiatives in neighbouring regions.
‘We will seek to build more IoT model complexes in Korea by cooperating with other regional governments, contributing to establish a nationwide ecosystem for IoT services,’ continued Sung-joon.
The IoT model will look at tackling issues around security, the environment, energy and transport, bringing together networks of sensors and connected devices designed to support public services.
The consortium has already proposed an intelligent parking system to manage the problem of illegal parking, which is a particularly big challenge in the Ilsan district. The system hopes to guide cars to nearby public parking spots.
Another project will see over 200 bus stops set up with environmental sensors which detect dust, exhaust fumes and noise levels on the roads. The information will be delivered through the mobile network.
The LG Uplus team is also considering an automatic street lights control system, which turns individual lights on and off by detecting nearby pedestrians.
The firm is opening a smart city support centre in Goyang this August to encourage further participation from local organisations.
