The edge is one of the most often quoted trends in the data centre industry, and yet one of the least understood.

On the face of it, it’s simple – driven by a constantly increasing need for quick access to data stored in a place as close as possible to the user, the industry is moving away from medium-sized colocation data centres that sit away from the population, and towards micro data centres that exist in the same place as the users – in towns, cities and villages.

But the technologies and trends pushing this development are numerous and varied. Some took hold a few years ago – millions of people streaming many hours of video, for instance. Others, such as the proliferation of IoT devices, are gathering pace and popularity, while the remaining set, such as self-driving cars, are nearly here, but certainly can’t yet be described as mainstream.

That means that requirements vary, whether it’s latency, power, or the type of data being processed. And with the speed at which IT develops, we cannot simply describe what an edge data centre looks like or what it will look like in a few years’ time.

What we do know, though, is that these technologies are having a big impact. The relationship between hyperscale, colocation and edge data centres is changing, with the ‘middle’ starting to shrink.

This webinar, carried out by The Stack in association with Delta, takes an in-depth look at what this means for the industry, and particularly those involved in powering data centres.

Moderated by industry expert Ian Bitterlin, a Chartered Engineer with more than 25 years experience in data centre power and cooling, and with panellists Mikael Berggren, Director of data centre Business Development at Delta, and Geraint Davies, Global Director at Eltek, our exclusive roundtable is the place to find out what’s really next for the edge, from a panel with decades of experience.
