China Mobile selects Djibouti Data Center for African expansion
Tue 5 Sep 2017
China Mobile International (CMI) has announced a new partnership with Djibouti Data Center (DDC) as it looks to expand its network services into the African continent.
The agreement will see China Mobile International, a subsidiary of China Mobile Limited, establish its own colocation and undersea fibre cable access services in east Africa.
According to the announcement, DDC will help CMI to establish cable head access, cross-connect and colocation facilities just metres from Djibouti Telecom’s cable landing station which acts as a gateway to many of the fastest growing markets in the region.
‘We are very pleased that China Mobile International will be joining the carrier neutral DDC ecosystem. The addition of CMI further establishes the DDC ecosystem as the leading carrier neutral data center hub in east Africa serving global and regional telco’s, MNOs, ISPs, and content providers,’ commented DDC CEO Anthony Voscarides.
He added: ‘Serving partners such as CMI in the neutral DDC ecosystem supports our mutual objective of making a significant contribution to Africa’s digital evolution, and will most certainly contribute to the economic development and social well-being of the region.’
DDC is the first, and currently the only Tier 3 carrier-neutral data centre environment in east Africa with direct access to all major international and regional fibre optic systems connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia markets with Africa – including Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) and South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SeaMeWe-5).
While China Mobile continues to expand internationally, with a global footprint of 17 countries worldwide, it is also fortifying its domestic offering. In 2015, the telecom giant started construction on a 119,000 sq.m facility in Northwest China. The data centre was built in support of an agreement between China Mobile and Karamay Municipal Government in promotion of smart cities development and the use of cloud technologies in enterprise.
