Kansas-based data centre firm QTS Realty is planning a major expansion project at its Las Colinas campus at Longhorn Drive in Irving, Texas.

According to local reports, QTS recently filed over $78 million (approx. £60 million) in building permits to complete two data halls and construct a new building on the expansive 54-acre plot.

The proposed expansion would make the Las Colinas site one of the largest data centre campuses in the United States.

‘Due to success in leasing our existing capacity in Irving, we are developing preliminary plans for adding capacity in land adjacent to our current site,’ said Chad Giddings, vice president of marketing at QTS.

According to QTS, the Las Colinas facility provides between 25,000 sq.ft and 300,000 sq.ft of data centre halls. The company purchased the former 700,000 sq.ft Maxim semiconductor manufacturing plant in 2013 and converted it into a state-of-the-art data centre. The facility was also previously a purpose-built chip plant for Amtel.

Earlier this year, QTS paid around $50 million for Health Care Services’ data centre on Park Vista Boulevard in the 18,000-acre AllianceTexas development in North Fort Worth. This site also includes land for major expansion.

QTS owns, operates and manages over 5 million square feet of data centre space and supports more than 1,100 customers throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific.

The international data centre and cloud services provider announced recently that it has achieved 99.999% or greater uptime across its worldwide data centre portfolio since 2008.

‘Data center availability is critical to the ever-increasing demands of enterprise organizations and their customers – be it digitizing patient records, consuming online entertainment or conducting e-commerce transactions,’ commented Jim Reinhart, Chief Operating Officer at QTS.

He added: ‘Our track record of achieving ‘five 9’s’ or greater uptime is a reflection of our long-standing commitment to delivering a premium customer experience through our facilities, technology, and people.’
