Aligned data centre achieves Tier III certification

Tue 14 Feb 2017

Aligned Data Centers has received Tier III certification in both design and construction categories for its facility in Plano, Texas.

The 30MW Plano data center was opened in November 2015, and consists of 100,000 square feet of collocation space on a 19-acre campus. The facility also offers customers 24×7 guard staff and an on-site command center.

The Uptime Institute, an independent advisory organization, certifies data centers at various levels that meet or exceed stringent requirements. Uptime Institute certifications are internationally recognized benchmarks of quality for data center facilities.

Tier III certification in data center design (TCDD) certifies that the facility meets mechanical, electrical, and structural elements to provide for concurrent maintainability. Tier III construction certification (TCCF) verifies that the data center has been constructed without error, and is built to perform as designed.

The company also enlisted MTechnology to analyze the reliability of the electrical and cooling systems at the Plano facility. Using the IEEE Standard, MTechnology used a fault tree analysis comprised of 12.4 million possible combinations to calculate the data center’s reliability at 99.9999%. MTechnology estimated the facility’s Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) at 400 years.

“Most data centers achieve an MTBF between five and 50 years,” says Stephen Fairfax, President of MTechnology.  “Aligned Data Centers has achieved one of the highest combined cooling and electrical reliabilities we have analyzed in our 20 years.  This reliability is so high and the probability of failure so low that there is no significant way to improve the design.”

The Plano data center has also been certified as compliant with HIPAA, HITECH, and Sarbanes-Oxley, as well as NIST 800-53 for collocation services.

Aligned offers customers collocation space at its data centers on a pay-for-use basis, whereby customers pay only for the capacity they actually use without a minimum requirement. This helps customers to cut costs by not paying for unused capacity, while allowing for increased flexibility with incremental scaling.

Last December, the company was recognized by the Business Intelligence Group with a 2016 Sustainability Leadership Award. This award was granted to Aligned Data Centers in acknowledgement of the company’s efforts to make sustainability an integral part of its mission as well as day to day business practices.
