NTT to invest in new Mumbai data centre

Fri 17 Apr 2015

As Tokyo-based NTT communications announced its expansion plans into the Indian market, it confirmed the opening of a new data centre in Mumbai which it will manage in partnership with local managed services provider Netmagic Solutions, of which NTT holds a 74% stake.

The new facility will offer 300,000 sq.ft of space, 3,000 racks, and 20MW – 28MW of energy capacity. The site will become one of the country’s biggest data centres.

“This is the first data centre that we own ourselves instead of having a long-term lease as is the industry norm,” said Netmagic managing director and chief executive Sharad Sanghi. He added that the company would be investing $100 million in the new data centre facility. Sanghi said that the data centre was expected to be fully operational by the latter half of 2015.

Mumbai was chosen as a preferred location as the city is home to the corporate headquarters of many global cloud providers, as well as multinational banking and finance groups, which the firm hopes will help boost business. The new site will sit alongside eight other NTT data centres in India.

“The new data centre […] will operate through a carrier-neutral business model. Netmagic has got some anchor bookings and hope to get more customers as we move along,” said Sanghi.

According to Netmagic, the new facility will also offer four different fibre pathway, but the company did not reveal further details regarding this technology.

NTT is also planning to build its data centre portfolio into Hyderabad and Pune to respond to new business demand as the Indian government promotes its long-term ‘Digital India’ initiative. After expanding its data centre footprint, it is thought that the Japanese firm will announce a global cloud offering by the end of 2015.

NTT acquired Netmagic in 2012, since when the managed services provider has grown 35% annually.
