NTT opens Shanghai data centre

Thu 27 Nov 2014

NTT Communications, a subsidiary group of the Japanese telecom giant, has opened its third data centre in Shanghai this week.

Located in the Pudong Development Zone of China’s largest city, the purpose-built facility provides 2,600 sq.m of raised floor space, room to accommodate approximately 1,000 racks.

The carrier-neutral centre is operated by Nexcenter and the company claim that it offers cloud and colocation services to customers at 20 percent cheaper than the average in the region.

NTT Communications, part of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, currently manages over 130 data centres globally, in 196 countries and regions.

The company suggested that the addition of the new Shanghai data centre was spurred by impressive data centre growth in the region. According to NTT Communications, the Chinese market in this area grew 20 percent in 2013. The firm hope that the new site will respond to the increasing demand for cloud services from the city’s businesses.

Many providers are seeking to expand their local footprint in China as cross-border networking becomes increasingly delayed by the Great Firewall of China. CenturyLink recently opened a Shanghai-based data centre, a decision driven by the government-controlled firewall, and Oracle is also reportedly in discussion about building its Chinese portfolio. This week CloudFlare announced that it would be opening 12 data centres in China over the next six months.

The new NTT data centre offers complete power, cooling and network redundancy for near 100 percent availability. Its data halls can support up to 10kVA loads on each rack. The Pudong district of Shanghai is well-connected with the city centre, and the facility benefits from direct links to a number of Chinese network providers.

NTT has announced that the facility looks specifically to cater for customers from finance, manufacturing, and IT businesses. It also offers 24/7 support for its customers in Japanese and Chinese, as well as English.
