Report warns 5G rollout delay will cost UK economy billions

Delays to the rollout of 5G across the UK could cost the country tens of billions of pounds in lost economic output, a new report by the Centre for Policy Studies suggests.

It warns that challenges posed by legislation, the phasing out of Huawei equipment and the coronavirus pandemic are stalling the delivery of 5G and could prevent faster economic growth.


SSE Enterprise Telecoms connects 8 new data centres to 100Gbps UK network

SSE Enterprise Telecoms has connected eight new data centres to its 100Gbps network and upgraded four existing facilities. 

The connectivity provider is now connected to more than 90 commercial data centres across the UK.

The newly-connected eight data centres are located in England, Scotland and Wales, including ASK4 in Sheffield, AQL DC2 and DC5 in Leeds, SCC and Six Degrees in Birmingham, DataVita and Pulsant in Glasgow and Next Generation Data in Newport.


NCSC warns schools of renewed ransomware threat

The UK’s cybersecurity agency has issued an alert to schools, colleges and universities about an increase in hacking attempts around the start of the new academic year.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned the education sector to be aware of ransomware attacks and urged organisations to follow their guidance on securing their networks.


Microsoft hauls algae-ridden data centre from the sea floor

Microsoft says underwater data centres are not just feasible but even more reliable than their land-dwelling counterparts after succesfully concluding an experimental subsea data centre project.

This summer, Microsoft retrieved a container-sized data centre dropped 118-feet deep to the Scottish seafloor in spring 2018 as part of Phase II of Project Natick, a two-year research effort investigating the performance, reliability and viability of submerged servers.


Azure data centre cooling failure takes down UK coronavirus data dashboard

A cooling failure at an Azure data centre in the UK has sparked system problems for organisations across the country, including Public Health England’s (PHE) coronavirus case dashboard.

The platform is used to track the number of new positive coronavirus cases and reported deaths linked to the virus in England and is normally updated daily.
