Six companies are to share £170,000 of government funding to help tackle the global climate emergency using artificial intelligence (AI). The applicants have been chosen to develop AI-enabled technology through the Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund, managed by Scottish Enterprise. Four Glasgow-based firms (Arceptive, Industrial Systems and Control, Integrated Environmental Solutions, and Trade in Space) will split the Scottish Government cash with two Edinburgh businesses (Space Intelligence and Topolytics).
Writing in the Financial Times, Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said new rules were needed to ensure it was developed and used responsibly. Artificial intelligence is “too important” not to be regulated because of the damage it could cause if left unchecked, the boss of Google has said. Sundar Pichai said the correct use of AI had the potential to save lives, but issues such as deepfakes and the “nefarious uses of facial recognition” showed it could also be a danger to public safety.
Fully autonomous cars will not be on public roads for at least 10 years despite claims from some manufacturers they will be available sooner, BlackBerry’s chief executive has said. John Chen said the technology was not yet in place to handle fully driverless vehicles and building such infrastructure would be costly. The Canadian firm’s chief executive was speaking during CES in Las Vegas, the annual technology convention where thousands of new gadgets are unveiled.
A virtual visor for drivers which uses artificial intelligence and a face-tracking camera to automatically shield a driver’s eyes from the sun has been unveiled by Bosch. The sun visor uses a transparent LCD panel combined with the AI sensors which intelligently darken the part of the display through which light hits the driver’s eyes.
