Wasabi Technologies, known for its hot cloud storage solutions, has announced the acquisition of Curio AI from GrayMeta, Inc.

The acquisition includes the intellectual property and the team behind Curio AI, with GrayMeta CEO Aaron Edell joining Wasabi as Senior Vice President of AI and Machine Learning.

Wasabi aims to integrate Curio AI technology into a new class of AI-powered intelligent storage specifically designed for the media and entertainment industry, set for release in Spring 2024.

Curio AI technology creates a detailed index of video content stored in Wasabi, providing a metadata-rich archive.

“A video archive without detailed metadata is like a library without a card catalog,” said David Friend, CEO of Wasabi Technologies.

Friend emphasised the role of AI in revolutionising media storage by enabling the identification of specific elements within video content, making the search and retrieval process more efficient.

The media and entertainment industry represents a significant opportunity in the storage market, with vast amounts of video content existing on outdated systems and new content continuously being generated.

Curio AI’s intelligent data platform uses AI to generate rich metadata, allowing editors and producers to search and retrieve specific media segments quickly.

David Friend added: “With the acquisition of Curio AI, we are now set to introduce the industry’s first AI-powered intelligent cloud storage.”

He assured that the Curio AI-powered storage would be simple, fast, reliable, and cost-effective, enabling customers to store, locate, and retrieve data with ease.

Benefits of AI-Powered Storage

Curio AI can detect and transcribe speech in over 50 languages and enables users to search for media based on various criteria, including emotions, logos, and landmarks.

Aaron Edell, now Wasabi’s Senior Vice President of AI and Machine Learning, said: “AI-powered storage will allow Wasabi customers to instantly find exactly what they need amongst millions of hours of footage and unleash the value in their archives.”

This capability offers personalised experiences and allows organisations to deliver content to the market rapidly.

“We believe this will be the most significant advance in the storage industry since the invention of object storage,” added Edell.

Wasabi’s Curio AI-powered storage will provide customers, such as Liverpool Football Club, with the necessary metadata to manage their digital assets efficiently.
