Vertiv has unveiled its TimberMod, a new addition to its Power Module and SmartMod families. This new variant replaces traditional steel with mass timber as the primary structural element in prefabricated modular (PFM) data centre constructions.

Mass timber, sourced from sustainably managed forests, offers a renewable alternative to conventional construction materials, in an attempt to significantly reducing carbon footprints without compromising performance.

This shift to wooden structures can result in a reduction of CO2 emissions by up to three times, factoring in the entire lifecycle and transportation of materials.

Viktor Petik, Vice President and EMEA Leader for Vertiv’s Integrated Modular Solutions business, said: “We are dedicated to finding innovative solutions that can help reduce data centre carbon footprints through the use of environmentally friendly construction materials and processes.”

Vertiv TimberMod is designed to withstand a range of environmental challenges, including seismic activity and high winds, while adding an aesthetic appeal to data centre architecture.

Vlad Galabov, Director for Cloud and Data Centre Research at Omdia, said: “Although timber data centres are not new, they have become much more accessible now that a major prefabricated modular data centre vendor offers data centre building blocks or an entire data centre built with timber, with the engineering assurance that it will remain reliable.”

TimberMod is the latest in Vertiv’s growing portfolio of adaptable and scalable PFM solutions, suitable for data centres of all sizes.
