Kao Data has teamed up with UK agency for digital education, Jisc, with the aim of enhancing public sector, academia, and scientific research computing in the UK.

The partnership is rooted in a data centre referral agreement, with Jisc selecting Kao Data’s Harlow campus due to its robust connectivity to the Janet network.

Kao Data’s Harlow campus will serve as a dynamic data centre resource accessible to Janet users, offering scalability and simplified access through a pre-agreed, preferential pricing model.

The collaboration strengthens Kao Data’s position in the London-Cambridge Innovation Corridor as a key hyperscale on-ramp with secure, high-speed connections to leading cloud providers via Megaport and Console Connect.

Kao Data’s commitment to sustainability, including its reported 100% certified green energy, an operational PUE of <1.2, and HVO-powered backup generators, will assist Jisc’s users in reducing their environmental footprint. This is a critical consideration given the projected increase in AI-related electricity consumption to 134 TWh annually.

“AI-powered computing is advancing academic research at an unprecedented pace, but as both energy demands and datasets increase in size and scale, they compound the requirement for access to scalable, resilient, and highly connected infrastructure,” said Alec Wright, Cloud and Data Centre Services Manager at Jisc.

Kao Data’s Harlow campus is home to a NVIDIA DGX-Ready facility, housing NVIDIA’s Cambridge-1 Supercomputer, as well as founding partners such as King’s College London, AstraZeneca, GSK, the European Bioinformatics Institute, and InstaDeep that was recently acquired by BioNTech.

The Kao Data-Jisc partnership opens doors for academic and research organisations across London, Cambridge, and beyond, positioning them to harness AI-supported technologies and contribute to global research efforts.

Spencer Lamb, Chief Commercial Officer at Kao Data, said: “We are delighted to have formed this unique commercial partnership with Jisc, providing its academic and research communities with high performance infrastructure designed to deliver the highest levels of sustainability.”

The alignment of Kao Data’s capabilities with Jisc’s mission to advance UK science, technology, and AI by 2030 is expected to spark groundbreaking research opportunities.
