Digital Realty to house NVIDIA AI supercomputer in Copenhagen for research

Thu 4 Apr 2024

Data centre, colocation, and interconnection solutions provider, Digital Realty, announced its selection as the host for one of the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This initiative is in collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), designed to empower Danish research in public and private sectors with computational capabilities.

The supercomputer, powered by NVIDIA, features the NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD system, incorporating 191 NVIDIA DGX H100 systems and over 1,500 NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs.

The supercomputer also utilises the NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking platform for connectivity and includes NVIDIA AI Enterprise software for a comprehensive AI development environment.

Digital Realty’s AI-ready infrastructure in Copenhagen will serve as the foundation for this computing system, facilitating the newly established National Center for AI Innovation in Denmark. The centre will focus on accelerating research and innovation across multiple disciplines, including healthcare, life sciences, and environmental science.

“Digital Realty aims to be a pivotal hub for AI, where groundbreaking research meets enterprise and data to drive transformation across industries,” said Chris Sharp, CTO at Digital Realty.

The hosting of this supercomputer aligns with Digital Realty’s efforts to support AI adoption, highlighted by initiatives like the high-density colocation solution on PlatformDIGITAL® and the certification of its KIX13 data centre in Osaka, Japan, for NVIDIA DGX H100 systems.

“Digital Realty’s operational excellence and dedication to renewable energy make them an ideal partner for this significant project,” said Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO at Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The supercomputer will be located in one of Digital Realty’s Copenhagen data centres, which has been powered by 100% renewable energy since 2020.
