Wimbledon partners with IBM to embrace Generative AI

Written by Thu 20 Jun 2024

The more than three decade long relationship between IBM and the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is being expanded as IBM’s watsonx platform is set to support a new Catch Me Up feature for the Wimbledon 2024 championship.

Using the IBM Granite solution, which was trained on the Wimbledon editorial style, a range of artificial intelligence (AI) created articles and analysis will be served up to users of the Wimbledon app and its website.

The new partnership aims to enable Wimbledon to scale its content, and give the organisation the ability to cover more matches than before, including wheelchair events, as well as more reporting for international audiences.

Both before and after matches, personalised player cards based on user data and preferences will be shown due to IBM’s AI-powered, watsonx. According to Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for IBM, Jonathan Adashek, the Catch Me Up feature is an example of the power of Generative AI (GenAI) to achieve insight-driven storytelling at scale.

“For 35 years, IBM and Wimbledon have been co-creating solutions that make fans feel more connected to all the on-court action, and our new research confirms they are beginning to understand the positive impact technologies such as generative AI can have on their digital experiences,” said Adashek.

Adashek added IBM is also putting these same technologies from its AI and data platform, watsonx, into the hands of clients worldwide to address their unique business needs.

In new research from IBM and Morning Consult about AI and tennis, more than half (55%) of global tennis fans say they think AI will have a positive impact on sports. For respondents to the survey, 36% said real-time updates would be an improvement AI can bring, with 31% saying personalised content is another benefit.
