London-based data centre operator Virtus Data Centres has announced plans to expand outside of the UK, with a new 90MVA data centre campus in Berlin, Germany.

The new facility, known as Virtus Berlin 1, is expected to be operational by 2026. Located in Marienpark, the data centre will provide easy access to Berlin’s airports and the city centre. It will have four buildings and designed to provide hosting and cloud service to hyperscale, government, and enterprise clients.

Marienpark is an innovation hub focusing on entrepreneurs, allowing Virtus to partner with a strong local ecosystem of businesses addressing challenges related to AI, HPC, and data analytics.

Virtus has partnered with European real estate developer, Investa, to support in its expansion to mainland Europe and provide Virtus access to a waste heat distribution system to drive ESG goals.

“We look forward to working with Investa to deliver a scalable world-class data centre campus in Berlin in a safe and sustainable manner,” said Neil Cresswell, CEO of Virtus.

Earlier this year, STT Global Data Centres (STT GDC) sold 40% of Virtus Data Centres to Macquarie Asset Management and the London Fund. This was intended to provide the cash necessary to expand Virtus operations into other European countries.

“This substantial capital injection coupled with our partners’ unique expertise will help us accelerate oru expansion into the European Economic Area to capture the enormous opportunities ahead and cement our leadership in the industry,” said Bruno Lopez, President and Group CEO of STT GDC.

Virtus Data Centres operates 11 data centres across the UK.
