Vertiv unveils new modular data centre product lines

Written by Tue 22 Jan 2019

Prefabricated containerised data centres and weatherproof power modules now available in EMEA

Vertiv has unveiled two new product families for its modular data centre offering.

SmartMod is a prefabricated containerised data centre customisable for customers’ power, electrical, and cooling systems. SmartMod can also be purchased with custom IT load capacities of up to twelve 600mm or 800mm racks offering up to 90 kW of IT load.

SmartMod options include varying Liebert APM uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup times and electrical and cooling redundancy schemes, including Liebert CRV in-row cooling. There is also a MAX option that offers twice the capacity of SmartMod with up to 180 kW of IT load and 24 racks.

Vertiv is also releasing Power Module, a weatherproof and transportable power module that protects and houses UPS and batteries. Power Module is designed to be deployed in new or existing facilities that require an agile and flexible way to scale-up power distribution and resiliency.

According to Vertiv the products will simplify and accelerate data centre deployment, including small sites at the edge that are often exposed to unfavourable weather conditions.

Last week, in an article for Techerati, Jack Pouchet, vice president of market development at Vertiv, said customers are increasingly seeking standardised modular builds configurable to their own power and thermal requirements.

“If standardised equipment and design choices work in service of increasing availability, they will be considered. If customised approaches do more to prevent downtime, they will be the choice,” Jack said.

“This approach yields shorter production times, reduced costs, reduced complexity, easier service, and when executed properly, a more robust design.”

According to industry analysts 451 Research, the market for prefab modular data centres is set to expand at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.4 percent through 2021 when it will have reached $4.4bn.

Vertiv SmartMod, SmartMod MAX and Power Module are available now in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Availability in other regions including North America will follow in 2019.
