Image credit: Vantage Data CentersVantage Data Centers and Nebius have announced an agreement to deploy high-density, NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure at Vantage’s CWL1 campus in Newport, marking the first announced commercial capacity commitment in the South Wales AI Growth Zone.
Under the agreement, Nebius will lease high-density capacity at the campus to support AI training, inference, agentic AI, and enterprise AI workloads for enterprises, researchers, startups and public sector organisations.
South Wales Secures First AI Capacity Commitment
Nebius said its wider UK infrastructure buildout will use NVIDIA’s full-stack DSX AI factory reference design, while the Newport capacity will expand access to NVIDIA-powered infrastructure for organisations developing AI applications.
“The UK is one of the places where AI is being built, deployed and adopted by startups, enterprises and the public sector,” said Gary Tierney, General Manager for EMEA at Nebius.“Vantage’s Newport campus gives us a strong foundation to expand access to NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure in the UK and support customers building the next generation of AI applications.”
The agreement gives Nebius a basis for expanding domestic AI compute whilst providing the South Wales AI Growth Zone with its first announced commercial capacity commitment.
Newport Sits Within a Larger AI Infrastructure Buildout
Vantage’s CWL1 campus has been operational since 2010 and is described by the company as one of Europe’s largest data centre campuses.
The site currently serves hyperscale, enterprise and public sector users and provides the power and connectivity infrastructure required for high-density workloads.
Its electricity consumption is matched with 100% certified renewable energy, while Vantage said its newest facilities are designed to minimise operational water consumption through closed-loop cooling. The system recirculates water rather than relying on evaporation, supported by air-cooled chillers and free cooling when ambient conditions allow.
The Newport campus is also part of Vantage’s wider multi-billion-pound South Wales investment strategy. The company said it expects to deliver more than 1GW of AI-ready capacity across Newport, Bridgend, and Bro Tathan.
“This is an important milestone for South Wales and for the UK’s AI infrastructure ambitions,” said David Howson, President, EMEA at Vantage Data Centers.
He said demand for domestic compute capacity is continuing to accelerate, and added that the Newport campus provides the scale and connectivity needed to support Nebius’ expansion.
South Wales’ Position as an Infrastructure Hub
The agreement also shows why South Wales has become part of the UK’s AI infrastructure strategy.
According to the announcement, the region was designated as an AI Growth Zone because of its concentration of digital infrastructure, fibre connectivity to London, high-capacity electricity grid infrastructure, and established industrial base.
South Wales is also home to what the release described as the UK’s largest cluster of semiconductor businesses, giving the region an existing advanced technology ecosystem alongside its growing data centre footprint.
“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone for the South Wales AI Growth Zone and demonstrates Wales’ growing reputation as a strategic location for the infrastructure that will power the AI economy,” said Adam Price, Welsh Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy.
The deployment sits within a wider regional infrastructure strategy rather than as an isolated data centre project.
Domestic Compute is Part of the UK AI Strategy
The Government framed the project around the availability of AI compute within the UK.
“Making that happen relies on having cutting-edge compute — the horsepower that makes AI possible — here on home shores,” said AI Minister Kanishka Narayan.
The announcement said Nebius’ wider UK expansion supports the Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan.
The Newport deployment is part of a larger investment programme. In June, Nebius announced approximately £1.7 billion ($2.2 billion) of committed capacity buildout across four UK sites, placing CWL1 within a broader effort to expand its domestic AI infrastructure footprint.
For Vantage, the deal adds a customer deployment to a regional pipeline expected to exceed 1GW. For Nebius, Newport provides another location from which to expand access to NVIDIA-powered AI infrastructure in the UK.
The immediate significance is that the South Wales AI Growth Zone now has a tangible commercial anchor. Rather than remaining primarily a policy designation, the Newport agreement shows how regional power, connectivity, and existing data centre infrastructure are beginning to translate into deployable AI compute capacity.
