UK Needs Neural Edge Networks for AI Success, According to Latos Exec

Latos Data Centres has called for the rapid deployment of “neural edge” networks—localised, high-density computing facilities purpose-built to meet the real-time demands of artificial intelligence (AI).
This vision marks a shift from the prevailing approach to AI infrastructure, which has traditionally centred around massive hyperscale data centres. While such facilities are essential for training large language models (LLMs) and powering advanced AI, Latos argues they fall short in enabling ubiquitous, responsive AI applications on the ground.
In a recent statement, Latos emphasised the need to move past traditional edge networks, which often lack the power required to run advanced AI models in real-time.
Instead, the company has proposed ‘neural edge’ facilities designed to overcome these limitations.
Managing Director at Latos, Andrew Collin, said the firm’s concept of the ‘neural edge’ is vital to supporting the growth of AI in the UK.
“Organisations can only fully capitalise on its potential when the technology behind it becomes ubiquitous and fast. Any bottlenecks or unnecessary latency could lead to increased risks or missed opportunities,” added Collin.
Latos Launches New Generation of Data Centres
To address these changing requirements, Latos has launched a new generation of volumetric data centres—scalable, modular data centres that can grow with organisations’ AI requirements. These data centres combine leading-edge power and cooling infrastructures to support high-demand AI workloads, and their modular design allows for rapid deployment and scaling with minimal or no disruption.
“These new data centres are unobtrusive, cost-effective, and designed to provide the necessary computing power to enable mass-market AI adoption,” said Collin. “We believe they are the key to unlocking AI’s full economic and social potential across the UK.”
The idea of promoting AI capabilities at the edge is not entirely new. In November, GEMESYS secured over £7.1 million ($9 million) in funding to “accelerate the research and development of its cutting-edge AI chip technology, which is designed to facilitate efficient on-device AI training and inference.”
Later this year, the UK Government will issue a long-term AI infrastructure strategy, backed by a 10-year investment commitment. This investment could represent a tipping point at which to deploy high-density, decentralised computing models like the neural edge first.
