Construction of a new data centre owned and operated by German utility company SWU has commenced in Ulm, Germany.
The data centre, situated within the Science Park III business park, is expected to be operational by January 2025. SWU’s facility will house 150 cabinets across 1,430 sqm.
Science Park III is located close to the University of Ulm, technology companies, and research institutions. The facility will also be located near to the Campus for Artificial Intelligence which is also under construction.
Klaus Eder, SWU’s Managing Director, said the facility will expand SWU’s ‘range of serves and supplies, including hardware and cloud services’.
The SWU data centre is set to serve as a colocation facility for companies and research institutions.
The new data centre is designed to comply with Government legislation ensuring new data centres meet climate-neutral requirements by 2027.
To achieve this, the data centre will utilise green electricity from SWU’s hydroelectric plants and on-site solar panels. Additionally, cooling systems will harness natural air and repurpose waste heat.
SWU is a conglomerate of firms providing electricity, gas, water, heating, and telecommunications services in Ulm. The company has invested £13.1 million ($16 million) in this project to date.
