Stonepeak invests £156m in GTA for digital infrastructure in Guam

Written by Tue 19 Dec 2023

Alternative investment firm Stonepeak is set to provide a strategic growth investment of up to £156.8 million ($200 million) to data centre provider TeleGuam Holdings (GTA).

With Stonepeak’s investment, GTA said it will be able to strengthen its presence throughout Guam. This is expected to be achieved through the development of additional data centres and the accelerated buildout of its fibre network.

“Given Guam’s increasing importance as a strategic hub for transpacific subsea cables, we believe there will be strong demand for additional landing stations and colocation capacity in the years to come,” said Andrew Thomas, Senior Managing Director at Stonepeak.

The digital infrastructure provider also aims to provide island-wide fibre-to-the-home service to offer faster speeds and increased resilience across the territory to help bridge the digital divide.

As part of this transaction, Benjamin Wu, Partner at Huntsman Family Investments, will assume the role of CEO of Forager Holdings, the parent company of GTA.

The business will continue to invest in other digital infrastructure opportunities in Guam, the Pacific Islands, and the Asia Pacific region.

“We believe that with the support of Stonepeak, we will develop Guam as a preferred gateway between the United States and our allies in Asia, leading to stronger economic and geopolitical ties,” said Wu.

The investment will be structured as primary capital and Huntsman Family Investments and its affiliates (HFI) will continue to be the majority owner of GTA and operate the asset.

The transaction is expected to close within the next month, subject to customary closing conditions.

GTA serves global hyperscalers and telecommunications providers connected to Guam through its existing cable landing stations and data centre facilities. The digital infrastructure provider also operates several cable landing stations and data centres in Piti, including its GNC Data Centre.

GTA is expanding into new geographies with its Tier III, 4MW Alupang Data Centre. The facility is set to be the first edge computing-led data centre in Guam and the region.
