Schneider Electric and Digital Realty join forces on data centre sustainability initiative

Written by Wed 10 Apr 2024

Schneider Electric has announced a partnership with Digital Realty on an innovative initiative supporting the circular economy at Digital Realty’s Paris5 (PAR5) data centre.

Using PAR5 as a testing ground, Digital Realty intends to create a roadmap that can be scaled to improve circularity initiatives across all data centre sites. Currently, Digital Realty has more than 115 data centre locations in EMEA, with many more planned for this year.

At PAR5, Digital Realty will reuse key elements of infrastructure and electrical components and will recycle and refurbish equipment in support of several of the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. These include reducing the company’s e-waste, Scope3 emissions, and greenhouse gases (GhGs).

The company’s sustainability objectives (to be met by 2030) include:

  • Reducing Scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions by 68% over 2018 baseline
  • Reducing Scope 3 carbon emissions by 24%
  • Carbon neutrality for EU data centres by 2030

Digital Realty will launch new programmes at the PAR5 data centre, including a first-of-its-kind battery rejuvenation assessment to extend UPS battery lifespan. This initiative aims to maximise equipment utility and minimise waste generation.

Senior Vice President of the Secure Power division at Schneider Electric Europe, Marc Garner, said with the growing adoption of data-intensive technologies, it is more important than ever for data centres to invest in sustainability initiatives.

Garner stressed that with European data centre growth reaching a record high, driven by the adoption of AI, operators across the region must explore and innovate their approaches to sustainability

“As we look to the future and digital demands proliferate, it is vital that technological advancement moves hand-in-hand with circular economy principles, ensuring that we build the data centres of the future responsibly for the next generation,” said Garner.

The circularity initiative that Digital Realty is implementing at PAR5 is expected to help the company save 50-70% of the embodied carbon in LV, MV, and 3-Phase UPS equipment.

Last month, Schneider Electric UK&I unveiled its EcoCare membership service at the brand-new Experience Centre in Warrington. This service offers dedicated success management through access to technologies, expert advice, expedited emergency response SLAs, and continuous infrastructure monitoring.
