UK edge infrastructure and data centre provider, Pulsant, has opened its new £4.5 million ($5.6 million) data centre hall in Manchester.

The new facility offers an additional data hall, expanding the facility by 320sqm and providing an additional 300kW of IT capacity.

Pulsant said research from LINX found that bandwidth needs in Manchester have more than doubled, going from 135 Gbps to 307 Gbps in the last 12 months. Hoping to answer this demand, the Pulsant Manchester site spans four data halls with more than 400 racks, offering 1MW of power.

Pulsant CEO Rob Coupland emphasised the need for infrastructure investment in Manchester, citing its status as the top tech hub outside London. Coupland added with more than 650 active, high-growth companies and a significant presence in software, Manchester ranks among the top five areas for scale-ups.

“This investment is our commitment to this area and we are focused on enabling these companies to deliver value, jobs, and progress into the city and beyond.

Coupland noted these businesses have already attracted over £530 million ($669.5 million) in investment, and improved infrastructure will enable them to leverage this potential.

Pulsant said the expansion aligns with the goals outlined in Manchester Digital Strategy’s targets for 2026, aiming for a £1 billion ($1.2 billion) investment in digital infrastructure and a 50% increase in digital sector businesses.

The development at the Trafford Park site is a component of Pulsant’s national edge strategy designed to equip regional businesses with the necessary infrastructure to utilise emerging technologies like analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

In November, Pulsant announced a £4.5 million ($5.4 million) investment into its Manchester data centre. At the time, Pulsant’s Manchester data centre offered 1.1MW across three data halls.
