New research from Telehouse has revealed that 73% of the UK adult public recognise data centres as vital to innovation, aligning with the UK Government’s push to expand data centre infrastructure to support artificial intelligence (AI) and digital services.
The survey, conducted among over 2,000 UK adults, indicates growing awareness of the sector’s role in powering everyday services and future technological advancements.
Increased Public Awareness of Data Centre Impact
The study highlighted nearly half (48%) of respondents believe data centres positively impact the services they use daily, like online entertainment, remote working, and AI-powered applications. Additionally, 50% of those surveyed support integrating data centre technologies and career pathways into school and university curriculums to prepare the next generation of talent.
Despite this growing recognition, nearly a quarter (24%) of UK adults remain uncertain about how data centres enable technological progress, particularly in AI development.
Driving Education and Talent Development
Executive Vice President and General Manager at Telehouse Europe, Mark Pestridge, underscored the importance of continuing to educate the public about data centres’ role in society:
“It’s encouraging to see public recognition of data centres as critical drivers of innovation continuing to grow, particularly as data centres have become essential to the way we live our lives. Our sector needs to continue to drive awareness of the real-world benefits data centres provide—from supporting the economy and creating jobs to enabling technologies like artificial intelligence.”
Pestridge also highlights the need for industry collaboration with the education sector to foster a skilled workforce:
“The investment being made into data centres over the next decade will open lots of exciting career opportunities here in the UK. We need to work with the education sector to include data centre operations in STEM curriculums, encouraging young people to consider careers in the industry and building a steady talent pool. The survey showed half of adults want greater education through schools and universities, and that’s exactly where we must be focusing our efforts.”
Telehouse’s Education Initiative
In response to the need for greater public understanding, Telehouse has launched an education initiative featuring ‘DC’—a character designed to explain how data centres power everything from AI to online services. Through a video, DC breaks down the crucial role of data centres in modern life.
In January, a study by Telehouse found over half of UK consumers were unfamiliar with data centres, underscoring the need for ongoing awareness initiatives. This latest research suggests public perception is evolving, with increased recognition of the role data centres play in digital infrastructure.
