OpenAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) company responsible for ChatGPT, has announced bold plans to expand its user base to 1 billion by 2025.

The Financial Times reported the company, which has 250 million weekly active users, aims to solidify its position as a global tech leader as AI adoption leads organisations into a new era, dubbed the ‘Intelligence Age’.

A central part of OpenAI’s growth strategy is its collaboration with Apple, announced earlier this year. As a result of this partnership, Apple will integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices including iPhones, allowing the chatbot to reach billions of potential users worldwide. The ChatGPT-iPhone rollout is already underway in the US with a planned global expansion in 2025.

Meanwhile, OpenAI is also diversifying its product offering to attract a broader base of users. That has included the addition of AI agents, or intelligent assistants capable of executing complicated tasks such as scheduling, shopping, and research, scheduled to debut in 2025. These will represent a quantum leap in AI utility for everyday users.

“Agents could be transformative, Imagine a researcher or a working mom using an AI assistant to manage their day-to-day tasks. This is the kind of real-world utility we’re aiming for,” said Sarah Friar, CFO at OpenAI.

In addition to agents, OpenAI is exploring the development of an AI-powered search engine and other applications designed to challenge tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

OpenAI Builds Data Centres

The company is building data centres throughout the Midwest and Southwest US. These data centres are expected to strengthen OpenAI’s capabilities and support ambitious user growth goals.

According to OpenAI’s Vice President of Global Affairs, Chris Lehane, the company is focused on securing ‘chips, data, and energy’. These resources are essential to tech companies hoping to get ahead in the race to tech leadership in the Intelligence Age.

The expansion plans at OpenAI are backed by heavy funding: It raised £5.2 million ($6.6 billion) in October, driven by Thrive Capital, for instance, and its valuation also went up to an unprecedented level of £123.7 billion ($157 billion).

The company is not without its challenges, however. OpenAI currently operates at an annual expense of £3.9 billion ($5 billion) and is ‘not close to breaking even’. according to insiders. It faces stiff competition from companies that are also working on advanced AI agents and infrastructure, including Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic.

The regulatory environment is complex and the future of public-private partnerships in AI is uncertain. And just this week, Elon Musk, who has invested enormous sums of money in the company, filed an injunction to stop OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit company and seeking to void their commercial partnership.
