Microsoft planning new data centre in Newport, Wales

Written by Mon 9 Oct 2023

Microsoft is set to apply for planning permission to build a new data centre in Newport, Wales.

“We are preparing a planning application for the site in the Imperial Park, which was the former Quinn Radiators plant, to deliver a new state-of-the-art data centre,” said Microsoft in a blog post.

Microsoft did not reveal details regarding the scope of development or potential timeline, but a rendering posted in the blog indicates that this could be a single-storey data centre. To date, no planning application has been submitted to Newport County Council.

The tech giant held two public drop-in sessions on the proposals on 27 and 28 September. Further information on the data centre will be provided in the coming months.

In September, Microsoft confirmed that it is in early stages of planning a new data centre campus near Jigginstown in Naas, County Kildare.
