Meta has signed two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Highfield Solar to acquire solar energy in Ireland valued at £154 million ($189 million).

One of Ireland’s ‘most significant solar energy’ agreements to date, the deals will support Meta’s operations in Ireland including a data centre campus in County Meath.

These agreements involve the offtake of the output of two operational solar farms in Meath and Wexford. Highfield Solar will provide Meta with a total electrical power capacity of 276MWp for 15 years.

“This transaction is a testament to the quality of our assets and our ability to contract with experienced and sophisticated buyers, and we’re proud to partner with Meta on these projects,” said Peter Kavanagh, Managing Director at Highfield Energy.

Both solar farms were originated and financed by Highfield Solar. They are currently operational and supply renewable energy through the national grid.

Head of Meta Ireland, Anne O’Leary, said she was delighted to announce the partnership with Highfield Solar.

“Plus, it aligns with the Irish Government’s Climate Action Plan, which aims to source 15% of electricity consumption from renewable electricity,” added O’Leary.

Energy Manager at Meta, Andrew Rudersdorf, said the solar farm in Wexford and the solar farm located in Meath will ‘significantly’ advance the company’s sustainability objectives.

”These agreements significantly contribute to Meta’s goals of supporting our operations with 100% renewable energy and achieving net zero emissions for our value chain,” said Rudersdorf.

In 2020, Meta expanded its investments in Irish onshore wind farm projects. This expansion included a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Brookfield for the 28.8MW Lisheen III Wind project in County Tipperary.

Prior to this, in 2016, Meta entered into a 10-year agreement to procure approximately 150MW from Brookfield’s Irish wind assets.
