Major UK vet chain CVS Group hit by cyberattack

Written by Thu 11 Apr 2024

A currently unknown ‘security incident’ has caused widespread disruption at UK veterinary services firm CVS Group, leading the business to hire specialist third-party consultants to fully understand the nature of the cyberattack.

On 8 April, the AIM-listed CVS Group said in an announcement the cyber incident had seen unauthorised external access to a limited number of its IT systems.

“Upon discovery of the incident, CVS took immediate steps to isolate the issue and, to prevent wider unauthorised access, took its IT systems temporarily offline, as part of the Group’s response plan,” said the CVS Group.

With around 450 vet practices in the UK, close to 50 more outside the UK and more than 9,000 global employees, CVS reports that only its UK operations have been impacted. Due to the incident, CVS say plans for migration of its practice management system and IT infrastructure to the cloud are being accelerated.

“Whilst we will continue to focus on providing high levels of clinical care to clients and patients, the security steps taken and the planned migration of our operational systems are likely to have an impact on operations for a number of weeks,” says the notice of cyber incident statement.

Thanks to the efforts of CVS staff, the Group reports that it can provide the ‘usual high levels of clinical care to clients and patients at the majority of our practices’.

While the cyber breach did cause disruption, and some systems may still be affected, further external access to CVS systems has been prevented. Relevant authorities, including the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), have been informed by CVS. At the time of publication, no hacker group claimed responsibility for the attack.

A forensic analysis continues at CVS, with the Group set to give a further update on the situation ‘in due course’.
