Lunar Digital acquires Manchester data centre from Equinix

Written by Thu 2 Mar 2023

Lunar Digital UK, an IT and managed services provider, has acquired a data centre facility in Manchester from Equinix.

The site, Reynolds House, will be rebranded as Lunar 1 and Lunar 2, as there are two separate, self-contained facilities spanning 2,090 square metres. The data centre delivers 3MVA of power, with an option to expand to 4MVA.

Equinix announced that the facility would be closed in December 2021. The terms of the sale were not disclosed, but Lunar Digital said they could begin offering services immediately, ‘providing stability and peace of mind to existing clients who had previously been informed that the site was due to close’.

This acquisition allows Lunar Digital to expand its UK footprint, and add a new facility to its portfolio, which includes a Lunar 3 in East Manchester and Lunar 4 – a Tier III data centre in Norway. Lunar 4 is also tasked with cryptocurrency mining for the associated Lunar Blockchain company.

Robin Garbutt, CEO of Lunar Digital, said that the strategy is to continue to meet growing demand in the region.

“The acquisition will ensure client colocation capacity in one of the most highly-demanded markets within the UK. The demand for premium data centre capacity in Manchester continues to be highlighted and we are proud to be playing our part in supporting its continued growth,” he added.

A recent market report on the UK data centre industry noted that Manchester, along with London and Slough, was a key area for growth in data centre services and construction. The UK is one of the major data centre markets in Europe, bolstered by a significant increase in data centre investments, government and regulatory strategies, and increasing connectivity and digitalisation.
