L&T sign agreement with Tamil Nadu government to build data centre

Written by Fri 10 Dec 2021

Larsen & Toubro India (L&T) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to build a data centre at Kanchipuram.

The data centre will provide 90 MW of capacity, introduced in phases over the next five years. The project is expected to provide direct employment for 600 people, and indirect employment for 500. It will provide customers with end-to-end data centre services, multi-cloud managed and cybersecurity services, along application integration.

This facility will provide much-needed infrastructure to support the fast growth and increasing digital adoption in the area. As L&T CEO and Managing Director S.N. Subrahmanyan noted, “Tamil Nadu is on a growth trajectory, and we are delighted to partner with the government of Tamil Nadu to propel this growth – by building a data centre that will further trigger development by attracting investments and generating jobs for the people of Kanchipuram.”

On their side, the government will provide L&T with power and infrastructure support for the new data centre.

The company also recently entered an agreement with ReNew power, to promote innovation around green hydrogen projects. Under this agreement, the companies will work together to develop, execute, and operate green hydrogen projects.

“This partnership will allow both companies to pool their knowledge, expertise and resources to take maximum advantage of this transition,” said ReNew Power CEO Sumant Sinha. “I expect this partnership to set new benchmarks in the Indian renewable energy space.”

Green hydrogen is not just an opportunity to contribute to environmental initiatives in India – it also offers the opportunity to help India become more self-sufficient and less reliant on imported fossil fuel energy.
