Kao Data goes live with KLON-02 data centre in Harlow

Written by Wed 29 Nov 2023

Kao Data has announced the completion and operational launch of its second data centre, KLON-02, at its Harlow campus.

This 10MW NVIDIA DGX-Ready facility is aimed at supporting advanced computing and AI.

KLON-02 is reportedly powered by 100% renewable energy. Its architecture, which has achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification, is designed to deliver a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of <1.2.

David Bloom, Chairman of Kao Data, said: “As the data centre industry reaches a major inflection point, it is vital that UK Government ambitions to become a world-leader in AI and research are matched by world-class infrastructure, capable of supporting advanced workloads.”

The new data centre adds 3,400m2 of technical space to Kao Data’s portfolio, accommodating up to 1,800 racks of GPU-powered IT equipment (ITE). This expansion caters to the growing needs of customers in AI, financial services, cloud, and life sciences sectors.

Continuing the OCP-Ready, and hyperscale-inspired design ethos of Kao Data, KLON-02 allows for customised deployments, including liquid-cooled hardware options.

Paul Finch, Chief Technology Officer at Kao Data, said: “Driven by AI, rack and power densities are increasing at an unprecedented rate, so it is critical that the data centres of the future can accommodate the latest breakthroughs in GPU-powered computing and are ready to embrace the benefits of liquid cooling.”

KLON-02’s sustainable operation is enhanced by its use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for backup power, reducing net CO2 emissions by 90%. This approach aligns with the data centre’s goal of aiding customers in directly reducing their scope 3 emissions associated with compute activities.

Scope 3 encompasses emissions that are not produced by the company itself and are not the result of activities from assets owned or controlled by them. Instead, these emissions result from the activities of entities in company’s value chain, for which the company holds indirect responsibility.

In May, Kao Data announced an investment of £350 million ($443 million) in a new 40MW data centre in Manchester. The facility will also be powered by 100% renewable energy, and utilise hydrotreated vegetable oil for its generators. The Tier II data centre is expected to be operational in late 2025.
