Google opens Hanau data centre as part of €1 billion investment

Written by Tue 10 Oct 2023

Google has opened its first data centre in Hanau, Germany. This new facility forms part of a £864 million ($1 billion) investment programme by Google parent company Alphabet in a shift from advertising revenue to a focus on the growing cloud market.

The new facility covers four storeys over a total of 10,000sqm. The data centre will provide storage and cloud services to reference customers including Commerzbank, Fehrer, and Lufthansa Group.

“With the location of the data centre, Germany will become strengthened as an attractive location for artificial intelligence and cloud services,” said Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport.

Frankfurt’s Internet Exchange, DE-CIX, is located 20km away from Google’s new data centre. Because of this strategic location, Google is expected to provide fast and stable data services.

During the opening ceremony, two community projects were revealed, including a food bank for disadvantaged families and a digital skills learning centre.

Google announced their plans to expand into Germany in 2021, with a new Frankfurt Cloud Region hosted in the Hanau data centre, as well as a region in Berlin-Brandenburg.

Claus Kaminsky, Mayor of Hanau, said in 2021: “With Google, we have a strong partner at our side who is supporting us in setting up Hanau’s economic future, both digitally and sustainably. The data centre facility of Google Cloud embodies this transformation. We bring the cloud to us in Hanau and thus support the digital transformation of companies and public authorities.”

Google also announced a broad investment plan in renewable energy alongside their plans to expand into Germany in 2021.

In the announcement, Google said it aimed to run its business on carbon-free energy worldwide by 2030. ENGIE Deutschland was chosen as the energy supplier in Germany.

As part of the agreement, ENGIE was tasked with assembling and developing a 140MW carbon-free energy portfolio in Germany on behalf of Google.

“ENGIE is excited to collaborate with Google based on a first-of-a-kind agreement which will support the company with its sustainability goals and ambitious carbon-free energy target,” said Ralf Bernhard, Senior Originator of Renwables at ENGIE.

By 2022, Google said it will develop a portfolio of renewable energy sources to achieve nearly 80% carbon-free energy delivery to Google’s German facilities.
