In the face of market uncertainty, the parent company of YouTube and Google is set to commit an investment of £56.4 billion ($75 billion), primarily in its AI infrastructure.

After already investing more than £12.8 billion ($17 billion) in the first quarter of 2025 on technical infrastructure, the tech giant will spend even more to ensure that its data centres can try to keep up with seemingly unstoppable customer demand.

Google is not alone in its bumper investment on AI-related improvements, with Meta, AWS and Microsoft also investing tens of millions each quarter on this expenditure. However, none of these companies is immune to the impact of challenging economic circumstances and potential tariff introductions.

“We’re obviously not immune to the macro environment. But we wouldn’t want to speculate about potential impacts, beyond noting that the changes to the de minimis exemption will obviously cause a slight headwind to our ads business in 2025, primarily from APEC-based retailers,” Business Insider quoted Philipp Schindler, Chief Business Officer at Google, as saying on the investors call.

The de minimis exemption allowed items valued at less than £602 ($800) not to face any duties when entering the US, making it easier for low-priced goods from countries like China to be sold in the US.

“And maybe to zoom out, I would say we have a lot of experience in managing through uncertain times, and we focus on helping our customers by providing deep insights into changing consumer behaviour that is relevant to their business,” said Schindler.

Beyond tariff pressures, Google is also dealing with high levels of depreciation that are expected to push down profits, despite strong year-on-year growth. Potential fines from antitrust lawsuits from the US Justice Department may also mean Google has to pay out significant funds.
