Artificial Intelligence (AI) hardware startup, GEMESYS, has raised £7.1 million ($9 million) in a pre-seed funding round, led by the Amadeus APEX Technology Fund and Atlantic Labs.

The round also saw participation from NRW.BANK, Sony Innovation Fund, and the Silicon Valley-based Plug and Play Tech Center, along with grant funding from the German Government.

This investment will enable GEMESYS to accelerate the research and development of its cutting-edge AI chip technology, which is designed to facilitate efficient on-device AI training and inference. The funding will also support the expansion of GEMESYS’s team, with key roles such as Senior C++ Developer and Senior Simulation Engineer currently open as the company builds on its promising technological foundation.

GEMYSYS Europe’s Solution to AI Innovation

As AI hardware development remains largely driven by companies in Asia and the US, GEMESYS aims to position Europe as a leader in AI innovation. Developed in Germany, the startup’s technology provides an alternative that aligns with Europe’s growing push for technological sovereignty. Through support from the German Government’s EXIST ‘Transfer of Research’ funding program, GEMESYS intends to pioneer an AI solution that champions data privacy, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.

“Our mission is to bring learning capabilities to every device through technology developed in Europe. We are pioneering applications that empower edge devices like never before, setting a new standard for industry innovation and positioning Europe as a leader in distributed intelligence,” said Dr. Dennis Michaelis, CEO at GEMESYS.

GEMYSYS Technology Enables AI for Edge Devices

GEMESYS’s technology enables entirely analogue neural network processing, intended to open new possibilities for AI training and inference on edge devices. Unlike traditional architectures, this approach offers a significant reduction in energy consumption, allowing devices to process and learn directly from data at its source with much less data than conventional AI models require.

The company has built a working hardware demonstrator and anticipates upcoming silicon testing to demonstrate the full potential of its AI chip.

“We are excited to see GEMESYS redefine what is possible in Edge AI. Its technology has the potential to transform countless industries and push the boundaries of on-device inference and training,” said Ion Hauer, Principal at APEX Ventures.

GEMESYS said its chip addresses the ‘von Neumann bottleneck’ while maintaining compatibility with CMOS technology, a crucial factor for supply chain integration.

GEMESYS added its approach also brings key advantages to industries that require data privacy, offline processing, and reduced bandwidth usage, like IoT solutions. The technology supports self-learning capabilities, like outlier detection, data drift management, and model personalisation, which are crucial for IoT providers looking to enhance edge device performance.
