Leading data centre company, Equinix, may be currently considering divesting itself of some data centre properties in Hong Kong.

This strategic decision, which could be worth approximately £1.5 billion ($2 billion), aims to capitalise on the increasing demand for data centres fueled by the boom in artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Reuters, sources with direct knowledge of the matter, Equinix has enlisted Citigroup to manage the sale of up to 25% of its Hong Kong data centre business.

While these rumours of a sale come from reliable sources, a spokesperson for Equinix reinforced the importance of Hong Kong as an interconnection hub for their global user base and stated its steadfast commitment to the Hong Kong market.

“We will continue to invest in future growth to ensure our customers can deploy in Hong Kong with confidence,” said the spokesperson.

The surge in AI technologies has significantly increased the demand for robust digital infrastructure, especially data centres. This trend is particularly evident in Asia, where private equity investors, asset managers, and technology companies are actively pursuing lucrative opportunities in the data centre market.

Equinix Grows as AI Demand Increases

Equinix’s potential stake sale comes at a time when the company is already riding high on the global AI wave, with substantial growth in its data centre operations. The company recently reported positive results, with Q1 2024 marking 85 consecutive quarters of top-line revenue growth.

The Nasdaq-listed company has a market value of approximately £58.5 billion ($75.7 billion) despite a slight decline in its share price this year. In 2023, Equinix’s net income rose significantly to £749.8 million ($968.98 million) from £545.2 million ($704.57 million) in the previous year, with revenue increasing to £6.33 billion ($8.18 billion) from £5.6 billion ($7.26 billion). This financial growth is a testament to the company’s strategic initiatives and its ability to adapt to the evolving digital landscape.

The total global hyperscale data centre capacity is set to triple over the next six years, according to analysts. Synergy Research Group found generative AI technology intensified the demand for more powerful and expansive facilities.

As individual data centres handle larger IT loads, the number of operational hyperscale data centres is also expected to increase. By mid 2023, Synergy said the hyperscalers had 926 major data centres in operation around the world. The research group’s known pipeline of future data centre includes a further 427 facilities. This figure is one of the main inputs to Synergy’s forecast model.
