Equinix and Dell partner on hyperconverged data centre infrastructure

Written by Fri 15 Apr 2022

Equinix and Dell have announced an expansion of their partnership in hyperconverged infrastructure for the data centre. Under the new partnership, Equinix’s bare metal infrastructure division (Equinix Metal) will add flexible storage options with Dell PowerStore, data protection with the Data Domain Virtual Edition, and HCI products with VXRail.

Hyperconverged data centre infrastructure is a transformational approach to the traditional data centre. It uses flexible, distributed building blocks and eliminates dedicated storage to improve the agility and efficiency of data centre processes.
The expanded partnership between Equinix Metal and Dell will allow customers to purchase hyperconverged infrastructure as a service, with new offerings including:

Dell PowerStore on Equinix Metal: All-flash storage arrays as a single-tenant, fully-operated service.

Dell VXRail on Equinix Metal: data centre as a service (DCaaS) that combines storage, networking, and VMWare.

Dell PowerProtect on Equinix Metal: data security, data management, and interconnect offered as a service.

Zachary Smith, managing director of Equinix Metal noted, “We are not a storage company, we are an infrastructure business. We look to enable kind of an as-a-service appliance model.”

The HCI partnership between Dell and Equinix Metal began earlier this year, when the two companies combined the Equinix IBX data centre offering with Dell APEX Storage Services. With this initial partnership, Equinix became the first company to integrate APEX on a global scale, to simplify data storage and the multi-cloud data centre experience for customers.

“Data is a business’s most valuable asset and it needs the balance of accessibility, control and protection that comes with trusted platforms and secure interconnection,” said Denise Millard, Dell Technologies, senior vice president of Global Alliances. “This expansion of our longstanding collaboration with Equinix delivers a secure, on-demand hybrid cloud solution that allows our customers to transform their data into valuable information for making critical business decisions.”

Jeff Vogel, analyst at Gartner said, “Equinix colocation provides the hybrid cloud mooring that enables IT clients to transform their data centres and IT operating models into a cloud-based, as-a-services platform.”
