EdgeConneX enters Indonesian data centre market with GTN acquisition

Written by Fri 6 May 2022

EdgeConneX has announced the acquisition of colocation firm GTN in Indonesia. This marks the company’s entrance into the Indonesian data centre market. GTN owns and operates a 7MW, Tier III data centre in Jakarta.

The GTN data centre boasts zero downtime over the past several years, in a carrier-neutral, efficient facility. The EdgeConneX acquisition also includes additional land in Jakarta, adjacent to the existing data centre, which is earmarked for a new 90MW data centre development project.

Kevin Fong, Managing Director (APAC) for EdgeConneX noted that the acquisition of GTN is aligned with the company’s strategic global expansion of both edge and hyperscale data centre platforms. “The planned hyperscale data centre campus in Jakarta will give us capabilities to meet our customers’ requirements for capacity in this vital and growing market in the APAC region.”

The Indonesian data centre market is expected to grow to $3.43 billion USD by 2027, with a CAGR of 13.15% from 2022-2027. This growth is largely driven by the growing digital economy in the area, which requires high-quality, reliable digital infrastructure in order for it to act as a regional data hub.

Philbert Shih, Founder of Structure Research added, “Entry into Indonesia gives EdgeConneX presence in three of the largest countries in the world outside the United States. This is a market with tremendous long-term upside. Indonesia has strong demographics, a rapidly rising homegrown technology sector, and is early in the adoption curve when it comes to outsourced infrastructure services like cloud and data centres.”

EdgeConneX has been very active in APAC over the past few months. The company recently announced a joint venture with Indian infrastructure leader Adani. The joint venture, called AdaniConneX, is focused on developing new data centre facilities throughout India with the intention of building out the country’s leading green data centre platform.

Additionally, the company has invested in Chayora, a leading Chinese data centre operator. This investment provides EdgeConneX with the ability to provide data centre services in two of the largest Chinese markets, in Beijing and Shanghai.
