Edge Centers, the Australia-based provider of modular, sustainable edge data centres, is expanding its footprint in the U.S. The company announced on its LinkedIn page that construction has begun on EC101, a data centre located at the AON Centre in Los Angeles, California.
The new facility is the third Edge location in downtown Los Angeles, offering customers capacity and flexibility to access “true dispersed edge capability.”
Rather than competing in the U.S. Tier I markets, like North Virginia or Silicon Valley, Edge is instead focusing on Tier 3 and 4 markets. According to their website, in doing so, Edge is “tapping into an underserved reserve of customers across the U.S. and the rest of North America, from coast to coast.”
“Despite North America’s position as a mature data centre market,” the company website states, “the digital divide means that more than 21 million people across the U.S. lack access to adequate connectivity.” To solve this problem, Edge will deploy facilities in smaller markets that have not received the same attention from investors.
Edge Centers provides modular edge facilities with 150KW capacity and N+1 redundancy, using solar and free cooling alternatives where viable.
The strategy of targeting markets that are typically underserved for connectivity has already been explored by Edge in the APAC market, where the company launched a facility in Ho Chi Minh city earlier this month.
Edge Centres CEO Jonathan Eaves also released the schedule for future data centre rollouts, which includes Chiang Mai and Fanling locations by the end of 2022, and Luzon, Dallas, and Denpasar scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.
The company’s expansion is funded by capital investments. In the latest round, Edge Centres raised $5.7 million USD, which is largely being used to kick-start expansion into the U.S. market.
“The newly-raised capital will support and further accelerate Edge Centres’ aggressive, multi-continental rollout of its rapidly-expanding edge data centre platform. Edge Centres is poised to concurrently launch three new locations in Los Angeles, California.”
“Over the next 24 months, Edge Centres is planning to bring an additional 19 locations online, cementing the company’s position in the edge data centre market.”
