Digital Realty secures renewable energy for operations in Spain and France

Written by Mon 27 May 2024

Data centre provider, Digital Realty, has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) to provide energy for its European operations in Spain and France.

These PPAs represent an estimated 347GWh of renewable energy, equivalent to the annual electricity usage of about 200,000 European households. Digital Realty said the deals intend to enhance the renewable energy pool in Europe, where Digital Realty’s operations have been fully powered by renewable energy since 2020.

“We are committed to continuing to expand our renewable energy portfolio and making progress towards our global sustainability goals,” said Aaron Binkley, Vice President of Sustainability at Digital Realty.

In France, Digital Realty has signed two 15-year deals for wind energy in France. The projects are developed by a leading renewable energy project developer headquartered in Germany, wpd, and will encompass small wind farms in the French regions of Bretagne and Hauts-de-France.

“We are therefore delighted to be working with Digital Realty on the recently concluded PPA for wind farms at two sites in France. PPA contracts offer cost-effective and predictable energy supply solutions for companies wishing to commit to the energy transition,” said Grégoire Simon, President at  wpd onshore France.

In Spain, Digital Realty has signed a package deal in Spain for three 12-year solar agreements with a Spanish solar developer, BRUC. The projects are located in the provinces of Cadiz and Zaragoza.

“For BRUC, this agreement is part of our strategy of achieving stable, long-term income with reputed companies that share our vision of a renewable energy transition to fight against climate change,” said Luis Venero, Chief Executive Officer at BRUC.

Digital Realty Collaborates with Schneider Electric

Schneider Electric supported the negotiations to ensure the agreements met the standards of Digital Realty.

“The data center industry is one of the world’s most critical sectors, powering the global digital economy and driving the green transition through the adoption, generation, and development of renewable power,” said Marc Garner, Senior Vice President of the Secure Power Division at Schneider Electric Europe.

In April Schneider Electric announced a partnership with Digital Realty on an innovative initiative supporting the circular economy at Digital Realty’s Paris5 (PAR5) data centre.

Using PAR5 as a testing ground, Digital Realty intends to create a roadmap that can be scaled to improve circularity initiatives across all data centre sites. Currently, Digital Realty has more than 115 data centre locations in EMEA, with many more planned for this year.
