Cooling upgrades completed at Royal Devon University Healthcare data centre

Written by Tue 30 Apr 2024

Modular and micro data centre provider, Secure I.T. Environments, has announced that it has completed upgrades to the cooling system at Royal Devon University Healthcare, NHS Foundation Trust.

This upgrade is projected to improve the data centre’s power usage effectiveness (PUE) to 1.14, with a cooling PUE of 1.10. The cooling upgrades should reduce the overall energy cost for data centre operations and according to Secure I.T.’s projections, will achieve ROI within three years.

The new cooling system replaces cooling infrastructure with a free cooling solution, which integrates direct expansion air cooling with built-in compressors. Secure I.T. also integrated FreeCool circuits to the system, which helps the data centre to operate at higher temperatures, optimizing ambient temperature usage and reducing operational costs.

“The primary source of operating expenditure (OPEX) at data centres is electricity … Whilst maintaining the climate conditions within a data centre is critical, the ASHRAE TC9.9 2016 thermal guidelines now give confidence to operators that they can control the indoor temperature at higher levels,” said Chris Wellfair, Projects Director at Secure I.T. Environments.

These ASHRAE thermal guidelines that Wellfair refers to are from the 2016 publication, in which the group recommended that data centre temperatures remain within a range of 40-60 degrees celsius (104-140 degrees Fahrenheit).

“This combined with the efficiencies gained with new equipment will dramatically lower energy costs at RDEF and achieve a return on investment in under three years,” added Wellfair.

The installation of a new free cooling system at Royal Devon was a three-phase project. This helped to ensure that the data centre would remain active, without downtime which could interfere with critical hospital services.

Secure I.T. Environments, which recently celebrated the anniversary of 20 years in business, has become a leader in large-scale data centre and IT maintenance service projects across healthcare, government, and financial services industries.
