Cloudflare hit by another network issue (Update: Fix implemented)

Written by Tue 2 Jul 2019

“Aware of major Cloudflare issues impacting us network wide”

Fresh from dusting itself off from a route-leak issue that impacted parts of its network last week, network services provider Cloudflare is experiencing connection issues across its network, affecting millions of websites that rely on its services.

The issue appears to have begun around 2:15pm BST, according to the company’s incident report feed.

“Cloudflare is observing network performance issues. Customers may be experiencing 502 errors while accessing sites on Cloudflare,” the site reads.

Co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare Matthew Prince confirmed the extent of the issue on Twitter shortly after:

“Aware of major Cloudflare issues impacting us network wide. Team is working on getting to the bottom of what’s going on. Will continue to update.”

Cloudflare provides a content delivery network, authoritative domain name system, load balancing, routing and DDoS protection and firewall services. It is used by over 16 million sites, including chat app Discord.

While the previous outage only affected some regions, the current issue appears to be a worldwide problem. For instance, Techerati’s URL redirection service relies on Cloudflare for content delivery, so our custom URL shortener is currently out of action.

UPDATE

At 3:15pm BST Cloudflare updated its incident feed to report that a fix has been implemented.

“Cloudflare has implemented a fix for this issue and is currently monitoring the results. We will update the status once the issue is resolved,” the company said.

Prince added on Twitter:

“Appear to have mitigated the issue causing the outage. Traffic restored. Working now to restore all services globally. More details to come as we have them.”
