Cloud Market Surges to $330 Billion as GenAI Drives Explosive Growth

Written by Fri 7 Feb 2025

The global cloud infrastructure services market soared to $330 billion in 2024, marking an impressive $60 billion increase from the previous year, according to the latest report from Synergy Research Group. Fuelled by the rapid adoption of generative AI (GenAI) technologies, the cloud sector is experiencing unprecedented expansion, with GenAI now responsible for approximately half of the total market growth.

The fourth quarter alone saw a staggering $91 billion in enterprise cloud spending, up 22% year-on-year. Since the launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, cloud providers have rushed to scale their AI-driven services, leading to a surge in demand for GPU-accelerated compute power and AI-optimised infrastructure.

GenAI as the Catalyst for Cloud Expansion

The cloud industry’s latest surge can largely be attributed to the meteoric rise of generative AI applications. From foundation models and AI-powered automation tools to real-time analytics and customer experience enhancements, organisations are investing heavily in AI-enabled cloud solutions.

“ChatGPT’s launch marked an inflection point for the cloud industry,” said John Dinsdale, Chief Analyst at Synergy Research Group. “Since then, generative AI has accounted for roughly half of the market’s expansion, as companies prioritise AI workloads, GPU-as-a-service, and AI-optimised cloud offerings.”

While the costs of AI infrastructure are steep, cloud providers are seeing massive returns. The introduction of GenAI services has created entirely new revenue streams, bringing in tens of billions of dollars for cloud giants like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Market Share Shake-Up: AI-First Cloud Providers Gain Ground

AWS remains the dominant force in the cloud market, holding a 30% share in Q4 2024, followed by Microsoft Azure (21%) and Google Cloud (12%). However, smaller players focused on AI workloads are beginning to disrupt the traditional hierarchy.

Among tier-two cloud providers, CoreWeave, Snowflake, and Oracle reported the highest year-on-year growth, largely driven by their AI-specialised cloud offerings. Notably, CoreWeave, a cloud infrastructure company specialising in GPU-accelerated computing, has broken into the top 20 ranking of global cloud providers.

With enterprises across industries deploying AI-driven applications at scale, the demand for AI-optimised infrastructure is expected to accelerate further. This shift is not only reshaping the cloud landscape but also transforming enterprise IT strategies.

Regional Trends: Where is AI Cloud Growth Strongest?

While North America continues to dominate as the largest cloud market, regions such as Europe and Asia-Pacific are seeing rapid AI-driven cloud adoption. Countries like Brazil, Spain, Italy, India, and Japan recorded cloud growth rates above the global average, underscoring the worldwide appetite for AI-powered digital transformation.

In Europe, the UK and Germany remain the leading cloud markets, but Ireland, Spain, and Italy posted the fastest growth rates, fuelled by AI innovation and increased cloud infrastructure investments. The United States remains the epicentre of cloud growth, with a 23% market expansion in Q4 alone.
