Garmin confirms Ransomware attack behind ongoing service outage

Smartwatch manufacturer Garmin has confirmed that it fell victim to a serious cyber attack which knocked many of its services offline for five days.

The firm said some of its systems were encrypted by the incident, interrupting its website and call centres, including its ability to receive calls, emails and online chats.

Garmin Connect, the app that users of the company’s wearable devices rely on to sync and monitor their fitness activities, has been significantly hit since problems emerged on Thursday morning.


Renault migrates data to Google Cloud Platform

Groupe Renault has announced a new multi-year deal with Google Cloud to help the french car manufacturer accelerate its Industry 4.0 transformation.

A major component of the partnership is optimisation of Renault’s industrial data platform, which connects and aggregates industrial data from 22 global sites and 2,500 machines.


UK and EU space agencies seek 5G applications for logistics

Companies are being asked to share ideas on how 5G terrestrial and space technology could be used to support the UK’s logistics businesses.

The call for proposals is part of a joint effort by the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), with hopes of increasing connectivity and closing the digital divide for businesses in the sector.


Schneider Electric accelerates Industry 4.0 push with extended AVEVA, Lenovo and Stratus partnerships

Schneider Electric is expanding partnerships with several technology companies to enable the “convergence” of IT and OT at the industrial edge.

The industrial edge refers to distributed IT infrastructure enclosures, spaces or facilities located in industrial environments.

The expanded partnerships have resulted in the immediate release of three programs including: new edge reference designs, co-developed with AVEVA, and integrating solutions from Lenovo and Stratus; a learning path for system integrators; and a collaborative online community for learning and sharing opportunities within Schneider Electric Exchange.

Tencent announces $70bn tech infrastructure spending spree

Chinese technology group Tencent Holdings has announced plans to invest $70bn upping its capabilities in cloud computing, AI, blockchain, IoT and quantum computing over the next five years.

As part of the investment, announced on WeChat this week, Tencent said it will spend billions building hyperscale data centres, supercomputers and sprawling 5G networks.


New wrist monitor notifies workers when social distancing rules violated

A wrist monitor could allow people to manage social distancing within the workplace.

Edinburgh-based Reactec has repurposed a monitoring system to keep track of social distancing, calling the device Safedistance.

The device, previously used for monitoring vibration when using power tools, has been reprogrammed to alert workers if they have broken the two-metre social distancing regulations.
