A new report published by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) and software firm Autodesk have called on the UK Government to establish a national AI engineering strategy that prepares the country for the transformative power of advanced AI technologies.
The report called ‘AI and the New Era of Engineering Innovation’ explores how AI is fundamentally changing the engineering industry and details the exact actions that need to be taken if Britain is to be a global leader in this field.
Around 68% of business leaders in the UK are increasing technology investment, according to the report, with AI-enabled automation lifting productivity by up to 40% and reducing project overruns by as much as 25%, adds the report.
“AI will not replace engineers; it will empower them to reimagine what is possible,” explained Kate Jennings, ACE Chief Executive. “We are at a historic inflection point for the UK’s consultancy and engineering sector.”
Without a comprehensive policy framework and defined direction, the report believes that growth in AI adoption will not reach the heights it could. Of course, issues around AI governance need to be addressed alongside investment in AI training and up-skilling in digital talents.
Thanks to the strong research base in the UK, the industry connections and powerful talent pool, being able to embrace AI-powered engineering is possible, as long as the right framework and policies are implemented.
“From energy resilience to national infrastructure, our work underpins prosperity and progress – and AI is now reshaping how we deliver it. With the right frameworks, leadership, and skills, the UK can lead the world in safe, ethical and innovative engineering.
“Our priority is ensuring technology enhances the human expertise that defines our profession, delivering lasting value for communities and the planet,” she added.
