Bharti Airtel to invest $67 million in data centres

Written by Wed 6 Oct 2021

Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications provider headquartered in India, has announced that it will invest $673 million USD in data centres. The main purpose of this investment will be to expand Airtel’s data centre footprint to meet growing customer demand in the country.

Nxtra, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, will make the investment sometime in the next three years. The goal of Airtel’s strategy is to connect 80 cities across India, tripling its current capacity to over 400MW.

The company currently owns and operates 10 large data centres and 120 edge data centres across India. Airtel is known as one of India’s premier telecommunications companies, operating throughout South Asia and Africa across 18 countries, with a mobile customer base of more than 440 million people.

Investment in a network of enterprise-level data centres will allow Bharti Airtel to offer new services and gain traction with larger enterprises.

CEO of Airtel Business, Ajay Chitkara, stated in a news conference, “There is huge potential and huge demand for data centres, which is expected in the next three to four years’ time.”

A recent report from JLL India supported this estimate, showing that the country would need six million square feet of data centre space, with an increased need for access, 5G, IoT, cloud, and data localization compliance.

Bharti Airtel is also in the midst of a fundraising campaign, issuing a limited number of shares in an effort to generate money. The company hopes to raise $2.84 billion USD, which it will use to invest in 5G technology in India. Singtel, already a 14% owner of Airtel, has committed to contributing $405 million to the fundraising efforts.

Singtel CFO Arthur Lang said that the investment was part of a company strategy to leverage growth in smartphone users in India over the next two years. “Our participation in this rights offering underscores our confidence in Airtel’s growth prospects,” he said.
