AtlasEdge, a leading Edge data centre company with locations throughout Europe, has acquired German company DataCenter One. While the financial details of the transaction have not yet been released, the acquisition is expected to pass regulatory review by the end of 2022.

The DataCenter One acquisition accelerates AtlasEdge’s expansion across Germany, and provides a critical connection between different locations throughout Europe. AtlasEdge currently owns and operates two Tier 3 certified data centres in Berlin and Hamburg. When the acquisition is complete, these facilities will be connected to the DataCenter One network, which supports data centres in North-Rhine Westphalia, Leverkusen, and Stuttgart.

This expansion was planned at a strategic moment, as customer demand for low-latency, high-bandwidth access is growing and Edge deployments are accelerating across Europe in response.

Guiliano Di Vitantonio, CEO of AtlasEdge, noted that the DataCenter One (DC1) acquisition was a highly-strategic move for the company. “Germany is an important part of our expansion plans and a market that has seen customer demand rise across multiple metros. Acquiring DC1 transforms AtlasEdge into Germany’s leading distributed platform with ready-to-sell capacity in key locations across the country.”

“We look forward to working with our new colleagues and continuing to grow our footprint across the continent.”

AtlasEdge stated that they plan to keep the DC1 senior management team in place, to make best use of the existing team’s deep knowledge of the German market and track record of success. Additionally, the CEO of DC1, Wolfgang Kaufman, will be joining the AtlasEdge executive management team.

Mr. Kaufmann noted that the two companies are strategically aligned, and that by combining their businesses they will be able to meet rising demand throughout Germany. “The joint expertise of DC1 and AtlasEdge, together with the increased scale and customer offering that this deal enables is a real win. We have experienced first-hand the rising demand and growth potential in the German market, and this is a fantastic next step for us. Our combined locations, ethos and ambition are all the right ingredients, and we’re very excited to be joining AtlasEdge.”

As a subsidiary of Liberty Global telecommunications and DigitalBridge, a leading digital infrastructure fund, AtlasEdge has been pursuing a strategy of acquiring existing data centre facilities over building its own. In late 2021, the company struck a deal with Colt Data Centres to take over twelve of Colt’s facilities, including the two German data centres (Berlin and Hamburg) mentioned above. The remaining 10 data centres acquired from Colt include locations in Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Madrid, Paris and Zurich.

In alignment with this strategy, AtlasEdge also acquired the Cornelius House data centre in Leeds, UK earlier this year.
