Amazon to invest additional £2.18B in OpenAI competitor Anthropic

Written by Tue 2 Apr 2024

Amazon has announced it will invest an additional £2.18 billion ($2.75 billion) in the generative artificial intelligence (AI) company, Anthropic.

This amount, added to the £1.79 billion ($2.25 billion) invested last September, will bring Amazon’s total stake in the company to £3.1 billion ($4 billion). In return for the investment, Amazon will obtain a minority ownership in the company.

“We have a notable history with Anthropic, together helping organisations of all sizes around the world to deploy advanced generative AI applications across their organisations,” said Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of Data and AI at AWS.

Sivasubramanian added Anthropic’s recent advancements in generative AI, showcased by the introduction of its state-of-the-art Claude 3 family of models, align with Amazon’s top-tier infrastructure.

Interest in AI continues to grow, and businesses and users find new applications for the technology. Grandview Research estimated the global AI market will grow at a CAGR of 37.3% through 2030. There are concerns that a lack of reliable data could hinder the development of large language models as competition between companies like Anthropic and OpenAI increases.

However, with high interest and increasing adoption, and high-profile investments of billions of dollars, the outlook for the AI market is quite positive.

“Generative AI is poised to be the most transformational technology of our time, and we believe our strategic collaboration with Anthropic will further improve our customers’ experiences, and look forward to what’s next,” said Dr. Sivasubramanian.

Amazon Builds on Past Collaboration

Anthropic co-founders, brother and sister team Daniela and Dario Amodei, created Anthropic in 2021 to function as a responsible, reliable, and safe AI product. The company announced a strategic collaboration with Amazon in late 2023.

The collaboration involved Anthropic’s commitment to leveraging AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for AI model creation, alongside collaborative efforts in advancing related technology. AWS will serve as the primary provider for Anthropic’s mission-critical workloads, while Anthropic will utilise Amazon Bedrock for accessing current and future foundation models.

Amazon developers will gain also access to Anthropic models through Amazon Bedrock as part of the collaboration, contributing to the advancement of Amazon’s AI capabilities.
