Amazon commits to spend £7.2bn on cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore

Written by Thu 9 May 2024

Amazon has announced it will invest £7.2 billion ($9 billion) in cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore.

This figure is in addition to the £6.8 billion ($8.5 billion) the firm has already invested in the Asia Pacific Region up to 2023. Amazon Web Services (AWS) said the extra £7.2 billion ($9 billion) in funding would be invested between 2024 and 2028 in Singapore.

“AWS has been deeply committed to helping Singapore grow its economy, workforce, and digital prowess with cloud and advanced technologies since it launched its first Asia Pacific Infrastructure Region here over a decade ago,” said Priscilla Chong, Country Manager at AWS Singapore.

In a bid to meet growing customer demand and cement the position of Singapore as an innovation hotspot, AWS is doubling-down on the city-state.

“This investment will create a ripple effect across Singapore by increasing economic growth and cloud adoption. It also brings additional contributions to the local economy by AWS, such as upskilling the local digital workforce, developing renewable energy projects, and creating a positive impact in the communities where AWS operates,” added Chong.

According to research published by AWS in their Economic Impact Study (EIS), the combined investment made by Amazon will support more than 12,000 jobs across Singapore and contribute billions to the state’s GDP over the next four years.

From upskilling the digital workforce to establishing new renewable energy projects, AWS Singapore is preparing to support the transformation from Digital Economy 1.0 to 2.0.

A major focus of AWS is artificial intelligence (AI), with a new flagship AI programme called AWS AI Spring forming a central part of this approach. Six pillars create the programme that intends to catalyse AI in the country, including increasing AI adoption in Singaporean businesses, nurturing local AI startups in the ecosystem, and boosting research and development activities.
