AirTrunk announced the launch of a new flagship data centre in Tokyo, Japan. This facility, called TOK1, marks the company’s expansion from Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong into the Japanese market.

At full capacity, the data centre will scale to deliver more than 300 MW capacity, with a designed power usage effectiveness of 1.15. The initial phase will provide 60 MW capacity, primarily for the use of AirTrunk’s hyper-scale anchor customers

The facility will be located on a campus comprised of seven separate data centre buildings spread across 13.25 hectares. The campus will also include dedicated onsite power substations, supplemented by a nearby utility substation.

Robin Khuda, Founder and CEO of AirTrunk, said of the new facility, “The opening of TOK1 in the Tokyo region marks a major milestone for AirTrunk as we bring our market-leading speed, scale, efficiency and reliability to Japan, supporting the country’s digital transformation.”

“It’s an incredibly exciting time to be bringing online a hyper-scale data centre of this size,” he continued. “Large technology companies, as well as enterprises looking to migrate from on-premise to cloud, can now leverage the scale, security, connectivity and efficiencies of this world-class facility.”

The company recently opened the largest data centre in APAC outside of China: the 320 MW SYD3 facility in Australia, in the Western Sydney urban area. This data centre was added to increase capacity at AirTrunk’s existing Sydney flagship data centre, as that facility is near to reaching maximum capacity.

Investment in the Tokyo data centre market is expected to continue a strong growth pattern through 2022. This projection has been reinforced by investment from industry leaders such as Amazon, Tencent, TATA Communications, and Vantage.

Khuda added that several years of strategy and planning went into the TOK1 data centre, noting, “Today is a momentous occasion for the AirTrunk team and our partners that has been more than four years in the making: as we secured an exemplary site, multiple anchor tenants, strong local partnerships and importantly, high-voltage power to the site.”

“TOK1 is ready to scale quickly for our customers.”
