AI Summit leads to creation of global safety institutes

Written by Thu 23 May 2024

Britain and South Korea reached a landmark agreement on the creation of a global network of AI Safety Institutes.

At an AI Summit in South Korea, ten countries and the European Union have committed to collaborate on a network to improve the science of artificial intelligence (AI) safety.

According to UK Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan, AI provides immense opportunities which can help transform the UK economy. However, Donelan is clear that alongside clear benefits, there are also several risks when engaging with this constantly evolving technology.

“Ever since we convened the world at Bletchley last year, the UK has spearheaded the global movement on AI safety and when I announced the world’s first AI Safety Institute, other nations followed this call to arms by establishing their own,” said Donelan.

Alongside many countries, 16 leading AI companies, including Microsoft and Amazon, joined the conference. Leaders also signed the Seoul Declaration that underscores the importance of gaining international cooperation on AI development that is ‘human-centric, trustworthy and responsible’.

“AI is a hugely exciting technology and the UK has led global efforts to deal with its potential, hosting the world’s first AI Safety Summit last year,” said Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the UK.

The goal of these AI Safety Institutes is to form a common understanding of what good AI safety looks like and try to build-out standards that researchers and companies alike can follow.

Last month, the UK and US formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to collaborate on creating safe artificial intelligence (AI) testing models. The UK and US AI Safety Institutes are expected to work on a joint testing exercise on a publicly accessible model that sets the groundwork for a shared approach to AI safety testing.
